Norse Mythology

Nine worlds. Gods with questionable judgment. The end of the world is inevitable.

  • 9 modules
  • RU / EN
  • Ancient myths, extraordinary stories, and a little dark humour

No horned helmet required. The Vikings probably didn't wear those into battle anyway.

Welcome to the North.

Here, the world was built from a dead giant, the Sun spends every day running from a wolf, the chief of the gods sacrificed an eye for knowledge, and everyone knows the world is going to end long before it actually does.

And that's just the beginning.

Across nine modules, we'll explore how Norse mythology works, meet its gods, monsters, and prophets, discover why runes are surrounded by mystery, and find out what these ancient stories can still tell us about ourselves.

A World Where Even Gods Aren't Immortal

In Greek mythology, the gods argue, fall in love, get jealous, and occasionally make life miserable for mortals. Up North, things are a little more serious.

Here, the gods know their world will eventually be destroyed. They try to change their fate, forge alliances, make terrible decisions, fight giants, and raise children who will one day threaten everything in existence.

Sounds like a complicated family situation. In a way, it is. But behind the monsters, magic, and endless conflicts lie questions humanity has been asking for thousands of years.

What's worth more — knowledge or safety? Can fate be escaped? Why do even the most powerful beings make spectacularly bad decisions? And can an ending become the beginning of something new?

We're going to find out. Without the academic dust. But with plenty of respect for the ancient sources.

What You'll Discover

  • How the world began — and why someone had to die for it.

From Ginnungagap and the first giants to Yggdrasil, the nine worlds, and the creation of humanity.

  • Who's actually running Asgard.

Odin, Thor, Loki, Freyja, the Æsir and the Vanir. Their relationships, ambitions, conflicts, and decisions that sometimes have consequences nobody can undo.

  • Why runes are more than mysterious symbols.

The history of runic writing, Odin's sacrifice, ancient meanings, and modern misconceptions.

  • What creatures inhabit the Norse universe.

Giants, Valkyries, Norns, Fenrir, Jörmungandr, Hel, and other beings best admired from a safe distance.

  • How the ancient Norse understood fate and death.

Valhalla, Fólkvangr, the realm of Hel, prophecies, and what might await us after death.

  • Why Norse myths are still everywhere.

In films, books, games, language, and popular culture. You'll learn to recognise ancient stories behind familiar characters — and tell the original myths apart from modern reinventions.

Spoiler: there's quite a bit more to Loki than Marvel would have you believe.

Nine Modules. One Epic Story.

The ancient Norse spoke of nine worlds. We have nine modules.

No, we're not dedicating one lesson to each world. Instead, we'll follow the story from the creation of the universe to its destruction — and what comes after.

Familiar Names. Very Different Stories.

You've probably heard of Odin, Thor, Loki, or Valhalla. Maybe you've encountered them in Marvel films, God of War, books, or music. Or perhaps it all started with Vikings.

With Ragnar Lothbrok, searching for new lands and trying to understand the will of the gods. With Lagertha, who was never particularly interested in letting other people make decisions for her. Or with Floki, for whom Odin seemed a far more real presence than most of the people around him.

In the series, the gods rarely appear in person. Yet their presence is felt everywhere: in prophecies, dreams, sacrifices, omens, and the fear of an inescapable fate.

But who were these gods, really? What did the ancient Norse believe? What exactly was Valhalla? Why did Odin sacrifice an eye? And was everyone's fate truly written in advance?

And just how close is Vikings to the ancient sources? We'll explore these questions throughout the course. You'll discover which stories survive in the myths and sagas, what historians actually know, and what modern screenwriters decided to add.

Because Ragnar Lothbrok is a figure of legend, Vikings is a historical drama, and Norse mythology is an entire universe that existed long before television ratings.

And yes, you'll finally be able to explain why Marvel's Thor and Loki are rather different from their mythological counterparts. Without having to argue with strangers on the internet. Although Ragnar probably wouldn't have ruled that out.

How You'll Learn

  • 01

    One story at a time.

Each module is a complete narrative, divided into short chapters. Not a collection of dates and names to memorise, but a story in which everything connects.

  • 02

    Read. Explore. Notice.

Cinematic illustrations, atmospheric scenes, and carefully chosen details that bring the world of Norse mythology to life.

  • 03

    See what stays with you.

Short questions along the way and at the end of each module. Not designed to catch you out, but to help what you've learned actually stick.

  • 04

Recognise mythology in the modern world.

Go beyond remembering what happened in ancient stories. Understand why we're still telling them today.

No mandatory sacrifices, no hanging from trees for nine nights, and no final examination supervised by Odin. We're reasonably civilised.

HOW THE COURSE WORKS

This is not just reading. There is a game.

The course is a path through nine modules. You read, look at the art, check yourself and collect runes. In the end, fate will tell you what it thinks of you.

  1. 01

    Read and look

Each module takes 15–20 minutes: short chapters and large illustrations. The myth is retold faithfully, nothing invented.

  2. 02

    Check yourself

Quick questions along the way and a self-check at the end. No grades, no penalties: it is for remembering, not for passing an exam.

  3. 03

    Collect runes

After every module you draw a random rune out of the 24 of the Elder Futhark. No repeats. Each has its own meaning and its own joke.

  4. 04

    Play

Module 1 has a mini-game in the chapter about Yggdrasil. Place the creatures on the tree and earn a bonus rune.

  5. 05

    Watch Ragnarök

After each module a counter tells you how many steps are left until the end of the world. It honestly heads for zero.

What you get at the end

  • Your own pouch of runes: up to 24, each with a meaning and a joke. It lives in your account.
  • A unique prophecy built from your runes: past, present and future. It opens after all nine modules, and it differs from person to person.
  • A bonus rune for the Yggdrasil game.

Who Is This Course For?

For anyone who loves a good story. For anyone who's ever wondered where the gods, giants, runes, and legends of the North came from.

For those who watched Vikings, followed Ragnar Lothbrok's adventures, played God of War, or discovered Thor through Marvel — and now want to know the ancient stories behind those familiar faces.

And for anyone who simply wants to learn something new, beautiful, and completely unrelated to their day job. You don't need to speak Old Norse, know Viking history, or remember the names of every god. We'll start at the very beginning. Literally. Before the world even existed.

Every Story Has an Ending. Almost.

Norse mythology is more than a collection of stories about gods fighting monsters.

It's about courage and fear, wisdom and foolishness, loyalty and betrayal. About a world that cannot be preserved forever — but is still worth fighting for.

Nine modules from now, you'll recognise ancient stories where you once saw only familiar names. And perhaps you'll see the whole idea of the end of the world a little differently.
